Salt & Straw | Portland’s Famous Ice Cream

Co-Owner of Salt & Straw, Kim Malek. By Portland editorial photographer Briana Morrison

Salt & Straw is the best ice cream maker/shop on the West Coast. I was introduced to Salt & Straw on my very first trip to Portland in the winter of 2013 but I didn’t fully appreciate this amazing spot until I moved to Portland that summer. On a hot July day after strolling along Division Street I came across a rare sight, Salt & Straw had no line! In I went for my very first scoop of Marionberry Goat Cheese Habanero, a seasonal favorite.

Salt & Straw makes their ice cream from fresh, local, high quality ingredients which always leave me wanting more. Basically they ruined all other ice cream for me and are the number one reason why I could never be vegan (despite their super tasty vegan flavors). They have a wonderful assortment of ice cream flavors available year round which include my two favorites Arbequina Olive Oil and Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. Seriously, try them.

In addition to their classic flavors they have 5 seasonal flavors added to the menu each month. This month their focus is on the Student Inventor Series – They partnered with 5 different schools in town and allowed the kids to invent the perfect ice cream flavors. So fun!

If you find yourself in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, or Seattle make sure you find Salt & Straw and taste as many flavors as possible before building the perfect cone. You can thank me later. 😉

Salt & Straw is owned and operated my Kim Malek (pictured) and her cousin, Tyler Malek. Together they created magic in a cone.

general inquiries

The world feels heavy right now. More than ever, we need healing, softness, and moments of peace. We need to hold close the small joys, celebrate the ones we love, and find solace in the beauty around us.

Lately, I’ve been grounding myself in the simple things—listening to birdsong in the morning, slowing down to be present with my fur babies (especially as we welcome a new puppy), and finding deeper meaning in my work. Because photography, at its heart, is about preserving love, stillness, and joyful abandon—even when the world makes it hard to feel those things.

Where are you finding peace these days? I’d love to hear. ❤️
